Working with Balthaser Studios of Emeryville, California, Astea developed Zinio’s Online Reader, Standalone Reading Suite, and Android Reader for e-magazines. Based in San Francisco, Zinio is the world’s leading online distributor of magazine content.

The Zinio Reader is a rich content delivery application serving users of zinio.com. It allows for the browsing of high quality online versions of the world’s most popular magazine titles. Combined with a real life reading experience, the Zinio Reader’s rich feature set offers full text searching, sharing, fast previewing, and other interactive capabilities, including Social Web features.

Offering more than 6,000 digital magazines from a wide range of publishers, Zinio is the ultimate app for magazine lovers, with magazines available for reading on iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac & PC. Astea developed the Zinio Reader for the Web, for the PC (as a standalone reader allowing offline reading), and for the Android OS family of smartphone and tablet devices.

Zinio offers a broad range of popular magazines and publications across various genres. Users can access, read, and subscribe to their favorite magazines digitally on multiple devices, including tablets, smartphones, and computers. Zinio provides a seamless reading experience with features like offline reading, interactive content, and customizable library management.

Astea Solutions engineered Zinio’s Online Readers, Standalone Reading Suite, and Android Reader for e-magazines. The app initially targeted Samsung’s pilot generation of Galaxy Tabs and was one of the very first tablet reading solutions at the time. Users were able to browse through their personal libraries and could choose between reading magazines in online mode or sync selected titles for offline access. The app was tightly integrated with a content distribution network delivering DRM-protected magazines with the aid of a Java EE-based backend. Titles downloaded for local reading were re-encrypted with a device and user-specific key.
